Why donate to Heritage for the Blind instead of the competitors?

  • Heritage for the Blind is a non-profit organization, while most of our competitors are for-profit companies that run a car donation program for one or more charities. Usually the for-profit companies receive the majority of the proceeds of the sale of auctioned vehicles, while the charity receives less than 10 percent of the donation.

Is Heritage for the Blind a non-profit organization?
  • Yes, Heritage for the Blind is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, and is listed in the IRS cumulative list of tax-exempt organizations with our IRS identification number.

    What can I donate?
  • You can donate cars, vans, trucks, RVs, boats, heavy equipment, pianos and real estate. Vehicles do not have to run; however, they must have a title and cannot be stripped of doors, or parts.

Where do you pick up vehicles? Will I have to pay for the vehicle to be picked up?
  • Heritage for the Blind will pay for your donated vehicle to be towed free of charge anywhere in the continental U.S.*

Can I donate a vehicle that does not run?
  • Yes! Heritage for the Blind will accept most vehicles.*

How long does it take for my vehicle to be picked up?
  • Generally it will be picked up within 1-3 days. In some areas, there is the availability of same day pick up.

    Is my donation tax deductible?
  • Donations to Heritage for the Blind are tax deductible, but as with all questions pertaining to your specific tax situation, you should consult your tax advisor.

Who determines what my donated vehicle is worth and how much it is worth?
  • Charities are not authorized to place a value on your donated vehicle. The value you deduct on your taxes is decided by you and your tax advisor once the charity provides you with your receipt (The amount you can claim can only be up to the amount given by the receipt sent to you by the charity).

How long will it take to receive my official tax receipt?
  • After you have sent Heritage for the Blind the white receipt that was given or mailed to you by the tower, you will receive a validated official tax receipt within 2-3 weeks.

Do I have to be there the day the car is picked up?
  • You don't have to be there, as long as the keys and the title are left in the glove-box. The application for official tax receipt can be mailed to you by the tower.

Do I need a title? How much does a duplicate title cost? How long does it take to receive it?
  • Yes. If you don't have a title, Heritage for the Blind can help you get a duplicate title from the DMV. This generally costs $25 and takes about a week.

Who do I sign the title over to?
  • Please do not to sign the title as it will delay the pick up of your vehicle. The towing company will inform you how to sign over your title.

How much money goes to the blind and visually impaired?
  • Approximately 75% of our proceeds go towards the various programs that Heritage for the Blind runs.
